An overview of your trip

DAY 1 Fly to Sri Lanka

Take a scheduled flight from the UK to Colombo airport, Sri Lanka.

DAY 2 Arrive Colombo and on to Negombo

On arrival at Colombo International Airport, make your way through immigration, baggage reclaim and customs to the arrivals area. Here you will be welcomed by your guide who will be waiting for you and will escort you to your vehicle for your transfer to the Amagi Aria Hotel in Negombo. Once you have checked in, the rest of the day is at your leisure to relax after your journey, or explore the local area. If time permits, you may also enjoy a visit to the local market if time permits.

DAY 3 Negombo to Sigiriya

This morning check out after an early breakfast for your drive to Sigiriya, which is located in the Cultural Triangle of the Island. Commonly referred to as the ‘Cultural Triangle’, the central plains area boasts of temple ruins and ancient cities combined with national parks and glistening reservoirs. This makes it an enthralling visit for wildlife and culture lovers alike. On arrival check-in to your hotel and freshen up after your journey. In the afternoon, enjoy an excursion to the Minneriya National Park*. Sitting amidst Habarana and Polonnaruwa, the 8,890 hectares of Minneriya National Park consists of mixed evergreen forest and scrub areas and is home to favourites such as elephants and sambar deer. The central feature of the park is the ancient Minneriya Tank (built in 3rd century AD by King Mahasena). During the dry season (June to September), this tank is an incredible place to observe the elephants who come to bathe and graze, as well as the huge flocks of birds that come to fish in the waters.
*Depending on the elephant movement, you may visit the nearby Kaudulla National Park or Eco Park instead.

DAY 4 Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya Rock Fortress

This morning is your opportunity to explore the medieval capital of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa. The second most ancient of Sri Lanka’s kingdoms, Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu I. The city is known to have been the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Sri Lanka, including the development of irrigation systems that are still utilised to this day, including the Parakrama Samudra, a tank so vast that it is often mistaken for an ocean. It circles the city like a ribbon, acting both as a defensive border against intruders as well as a lifeline for the people. In the afternoon set off to climb the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most impressive facets of this unique complex are the Water Gardens, the Frescoes of beautiful maidens, the Mirror Wall with ancient graffiti, the Lion platform and the Summit, which was completely covered by buildings during the period of Sigiriya’s glory.

DAY 5 Sigiriya to Dambulla Cave Temple and Kandy

This morning leave your hotel after breakfast, for the drive to Kandy, stopping en route at Dambulla Cave Temple. This UNESCO World Heritage Site which dates back to the 1st century BC is an amazing complex of caves, first used as a refuge by an ancient king who commissioned magnificent carved images. Later kings made further changes and the caves now contain over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is a colossal figure spanning 15 metres. On arrival in Kandy, check-in to your hotel for two nights. In the evening you will visit the Temple of the Tooth in time for the “Pooja” ceremony. The temple is famous for its carvings and uniquely beautiful Sri Lankan art.

DAY 6 Kandy

Today, tour the city including the British Garrison Cemetery and a drive around the beautiful Kandy Lake. In the evening, experience an exhilarating show of traditional cultural dances and impressive performances, before returning to the hotel and relax.

DAY 7 Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

This morning, continue to explore the island on your journey to Nuwara Eliya. The sleepy city, often shrouded in mist, is considered to be the capital of tea country. You have the option of taking the scenic train journey to Nanu Oya, slowly winding its way up through vast tea plantations– must be pre-booked (1st class AC cabin or 2nd Class reserved cabin). Check-in at The Blackpool Hotel and spend the evening at leisure.

DAY 8 Nuwara Eliya

After a leisurely breakfast visit a tea plantation and a tea factory where one the best teas in the world is produced. You will be told all about the process of manufacturing tea and also gain first-hand experience of the manufacture of some of the best teas in the world. If you’re lucky you may be invited to taste a cup of pure Ceylon tea which begins its journey as raw green leaves in the hills and ends up as a final golden-brown graded product which we all know. Continue your day’s activities with a quick tour of the Nuwara Eliya and in the afternoon enjoy High Tea at Grand Hotel.

DAY 9 Nuwara Eliya to Colombo

Today, check out and make your way to the commercial capital of the country – Colombo, for a night at The Galadari Hotel. Upon arrival, you have the option, at no additional cost, of going on a City Tour. Sites include the fort and Pettah areas and a drive past the 100-year-old clock tower, old Parliament Building, Town Hall, Independence Square, a Buddhist Temple, a Hindu Temple, the famous red mosque, the Dutch Hospital shopping precinct, a Church and view some buildings built when Sri Lanka was under British rule.

DAY 10 Fly to UK or Extend to the Maldives

Having reached the end of your tour of Sri Lanka, you will be transferred to the airport for flight to the UK or to the Maldives.

For those opting for the Maldives extension, on arrival in Male you will be transferred via speedboat (shared) to your resort for a 3-night beach stay.

DAY 11 Maldives

Spend your day at leisure relaxing on the beach, or making use of the hotel facilities.

DAY 12 Maldives

Another day at leisure to explore the islands, or maybe enjoy some snorkelling or scuba-diving in the crystal-clear waters.

DAY 13 Fly to UK
