Kandy is a friendly city in the centre of the country. It is known for the Buddhist Temple of the Tooth, which reportedly houses a tooth of Buddha. It is set amidst verdant mountains and is home to the beautifully scenic Kandy Lake.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth

The golden-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha. During puja (offerings or prayers), the heavily guarded room housing the tooth is open to devotees and tourists. However, you don’t actually see the tooth, as it is kept in a gold casket. As well as the main temple, the complex includes a series of smaller temples, shrines and museums.

Kandy Lake

Enjoy a leisurely stroll around Kandy Lake, stopping from time time to time to admire the view from the handily placed lakeside seats. The most scenic section is the area around the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Ceylon Tea Museum

Located in the old Hantane Tea Factory, which dates back to 1925, just south of Kandy. Abandoned for more than a decade, it has been refurbished and is filled with exhibits on tea pioneers James Taylor and Thomas Lipton, as well as vintage tea-processing equipment. A guided tour is included in the price of the ticket followed by a complimentary cup of tea.
