The interior of the island harbours the Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park and several peaks including Mount Omoto. The northern peninsula is home to a mangrove forest habitat, whilst beaches, both sandy and rocky, can be found in certain spots all around the island. Ishigaki is very unspoilt and low-key, accommodation tends to be smaller-scale local hotels, there are very few chain resort hotels here. Popular activities are swimming, snorkelling, diving and various water sports such as windsurfing.
