Hokkaido is in the north of Japan. Low humidity makes the summers pleasant, while in winter you can enjoy winter sports. The island is a haven for beautiful scenery and wildlife making it popular throughout all four seasons. These natural areas of beauty include Daisetsuzan National Park, Shiretoko Peninsula and Shikotsu-Toya. Sapporo, the island’s capital, is a cosmopolitan and vibrant city, providing tasty local delicacies, wonderful fresh fish and regional cheeses. Hokkaido boasts of over 1,200 festivals and events held throughout the year.

Visit Sapporo

Home to the eponymous beer, which has a museum dedicated to it, inspiring sculpture parks, and delicious regional cuisine, there is plenty to see and eat in Sapporo.

Sapporo Snow Festival

The Sapporo Snow Festival, held each February, features about 250 snow and ice sculptures depicting everything from temples to cartoon characters, spread across three sites: Odori Park, Tsudome, and Susukino. These amazing works made of snow, ice and colourful light shows, turn the city into a true winter wonderland.

Otaru

Just a short 30-minute train ride from Sapporo, Otaru is particularly known for glassware and music boxes. Wander along the Otaru Canal before turning onto Sakaimachi road for some shopping.

Lavender Fields at Farm Tomita

Farm Tomita in Furano is filled with fields of lavender and other colourful flowers, as far as the eyes can see. For the best experience, visit in July when they are at their very peak and don’t forget to try the lavender ice cream before you leave.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Hokkaido gets a lot of powdery snow in the winter, making it one of the best destinations for skiers and snowboarders. There are several ski resorts to choose from, but Furano and Niseko tend to be favourites for overall terrain.
