On this exciting overland journey you will discover some of Tibet’s remote landscapes and experience a thrilling journey aboard the highest train in the world. The rail route from Beijing to Lhasa, at 2,500 miles in length, is an epic journey, traversing the astonishing landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau. After visiting Lhasa, continue overland towards Gyantse, Shigatse and on to Everest Base camp, before crossing the border into Nepal and finishing this remarkable journey in Kathmandu.

15 day Tour Itinerary

An overview of your trip

DAY 1 UK to Beijing

Catch your scheduled flight from London, or a regional airport to Beijing.

  • Transport: Airplane
DAY 2 Arrive Beijing

Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel for a three night stay.

DAY 3 Beijing City Tour

In the morning, visit the Temple of Heaven, followed by a stroll through Tiananmen Square, the biggest square in the world. Finally, there will be a visit to the Forbidden City which served as the grand imperial palace for centuries.

DAY 4 The Great Wall

Today, visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu, a post along the wall offering breathtaking views in a less crowded atmosphere. Mutianyu was built in the mid-6th century and its rich history can be observed in its unique structure.

DAY 5 Train from Beijing to Lhasa

Visit the Summer Palace, with a relaxing boat ride on the beautiful Kunming Lake. Stop for photos at the Birds Nest Stadium and Water Cube. Visit the Hutongs, for a personal insight into the everyday life of traditional Beijing citizens. Transfer to the station to board the train for the pioneering and exciting rail journey to Lhasa.

DAY 6 Aboard the Train

Enjoy a day aboard the train, travelling along the highest railway line in the world, admiring magnificent landscapes of mountain peaks, ice rivers, glaciers and desert. Accommodation on board is based on sharing 4-berth soft sleeper compartments, no meals are included on board.

DAY 7 Arrive Lhasa

Arrive into Lhasa at midday where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Remainder of the day at leisure.

DAY 8 Potala Palace

Visit the 13-story Potala Palace, winter home of the Dalai Lama since the 7th century. This will be followed by a visit to the 1,300 year old Jokhang Temple and the maze-like Barkhor Market in the heart of the city.

DAY 9 Norbulingka Palace

Visit the Norbulingka Palace, built in 1755. It served as the traditional summer residence for the Dalai Lamas. This afternoon, enjoy a visit to the Sera Monastery, one of Tibet’s ‘great three’ Gelukpa university monasteries.

DAY 10 Lhasa to Gyantse and Shigatse

Morning drive to Palcho Monastery in Gyantse. Continue towards Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet and visit the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, an extremely important monastery historically and culturally, it was founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama. Continue to your accommodation for an overnight stay.

DAY 11 Everest Base Camp

Drive from Shigatse to Everest Base Camp where you will enjoy an excursion to the base of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain at 29,035 ft. (Travel time approx 8 hours). Transfer to your accommodation for an overnight stay.

DAY 12 Kye Rong

Drive towards the Kye Rong border point for overnight. (Travel time approx 7 hours).

DAY 13 Border Crossing, Kathmandu

Drive to the border crossing with Nepal where you will be met and transferred overland to your accommodation in Kathmandu. (Travel time approx 6-8 hours). Transfer to your hotel upon arrival.

DAY 14 Kathmandu

Today you will enjoy a tour of this intriguing city, visiting the temple of Changu Narayan and Bhaktapur. Continue to Pashupatinath and Boudhanath.

DAY 15 Kathmandu to UK

Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
