Why Kyirong?
A serene, picturesque valley on the border with Nepal
The Kyirong Valley has long been known as the 'Valley of Happiness', is famed for its warm climate and as the gateway to Nepal. It has historic connections with King Songtsen Gampo and the famous Tibetan yogi Milarepa, and provided a vital corridor for the arrival of Buddhism into Tibet, as well as the advances and retreats of both the Qing and Nepali Gorkha forces. In late 2017 the border was officially opened to replace Zhangmu, as Tibet's major border crossing with Nepal.
