Known as the “city of eternal spring” for its temperate year-round climate and flowers that bloom all year long, Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province. In days of old it was the gateway to the renowned Silk Road. Today, it is the provincial political, economical and cultural centre of Yunnan, along with being the most popular tourist destination in south west China. There are plenty of temples and national parks nearby, the most famous and impressive being the Stone Forest. The city has a thriving nightlife, with plenty of restaurants in which you can sample the region’s mild, herb-infused cuisine.
Here we have selected a few of the sights and experiences that you really should see on a visit to Beijing.
The Stone Forest, or Shilin in Chinese, is a spectacular set of limestone pillars typical of south China’s karst landscape. Known as the 'First Wonder of the World' since the Ming Dynasty, it is one of Yunnan's main attractions. A local saying states "if you have visited Kunming without seeing the Stone Forest, you have wasted your time"!
Green Lake Park
Green Lake Park, or Cuihu Park, in the centre of the city, is one of the most beautiful parks in Kunming. Set between two mountains, Green Lake itself occupies 15 hectares of the 21-hectare park. It is an excellent place for a relaxing stroll, and to watch the world pass by.
