Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

In 1975, Tuol Svay Prey High School was taken over by Pol Pot’s security forces and turned into a prison and soon became the largest centre of detention and torture in the country. It has since been turned into the Tuol Sleng museum, which serves as a permanent reminder of the crimes of the Khmer Rouge.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Royal Palace and Silver pagoda

The Royal Palace dominates the Phnom Penh skyline, with its impressive riverfront setting and majestic design, bearing a remarkable likeness to its counterpart in Bangkok. Being the official residence of King Sihamoni, parts of the palace compound are closed to the public. The adjacent Silver Pagoda, also known as Wat Preah Keo or Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is named for its floor, which is covered with five tons of gleaming silver. You can see some of the 5,000 tiles near the entrance, but most are covered to protect them.

Killing Fields at Choeung Ek

Between 1975 and 1978 about 17,000 men, women, children and infants who had been detained and tortured, were transported to the extermination camp at Choeung Ek. It is a peaceful place today, where visitors can learn of the horrors that unfolded here decades ago.
