A relaxed riverside town, Kratie has some of the best sunsets on the Mekong in Cambodia. It is the most likely place in the country to see rare Irrawaddy dolphins, which are unique to the Mekong River. There is also a rich legacy of French-era architecture to discover.

Irrawaddy Dolphins

The rare - just 92 individuals are estimated to still exist - Irrawaddy Dolphins are best spotted from Kampi. They have a bulging forehead, short beak, and 12-19 teeth on each side of both jaws.

Wat Roka Kandal

Wat Roka Kandal, a beautiful little temple dating from the 19th century, is one of the oldest in the region. The walls have murals and stencilling similar to those seen in the pagodas in Luang Prabang, and to see the beautifully restored interior, you may have to ask around for someone with the key. Today this pagoda is not a place for worship but a small handicraft Centre.
